Secret Santa Name Picker for Office and Family Parties

A Secret Santa name picker is what people search for in November, when the office party and the family gift exchange both need a draw. The job is simple: every person gives one gift, nobody buys for themselves, and the matches are not a surprise argument.

What the draw has to guarantee

A fair Secret Santa list is a loop of pairs. Alex gives to Blair, Blair gives to Chen, and someone gives to Alex. Two things break the game: a person drawn to buy for themselves, and two people assigned the same recipient.

AllWheel's name picker does not email a finished match list. You draw one recipient at a time, on a shared screen, with remove-after-pick turned on. That is enough for an office of twenty or a living room of eight, as long as you know the redraw rule before you start.

Set the rules before any name is drawn

Budget and deadline

Say the spend limit and the day the gift has to be ready. A $20 cap and a December 18 exchange is a different party from a handmade-only Christmas Eve. Write it in the invite. Do not negotiate it after someone has already bought.

Who is in the hat

Include only people who agreed to play. A plus-one who arrives that night is a new name, which means a new draw, not a quiet edit. Remote teammates count if they can ship or hand the gift to someone who will be in the room.

Couples and “do not draw”

Many families do not want partners to draw each other. That is a rule, not a hidden fix. Before the partner's turn, take the other name off the list, draw, then put the name back so everyone else can still receive from them.

How to run the name picker

  1. Paste one guest per line. Check the spelling the group will recognize.
  2. Turn on remove after pick so a recipient cannot be assigned twice.
  3. Point at the giver, draw one name, and read it.
  4. If the giver drew themselves, draw again for that slot only.
  5. If the last person left is their own name, swap them with an earlier pair and say you are fixing the loop.

Read the match out loud or write it on a slip. The picker does not send email. When the last pair is set, close the tab. The list is not stored on a server.

Office party versus family living room

Office and remote teams

Share the screen on the call so people see the remove step. Do not drop the roster in a chat log that stays forever. A classroom or HR list of preferred names is enough. Skip job titles on the wheel. If the company also runs a prize raffle, that is a different draw. Use the Christmas giveaway wheel for the prize, not the Secret Santa pairs.

Family and friend groups

Kids can be in the draw if an adult is the buyer. Put the adult's name on the list, or put “Sam (gift for Noah)” so the recipient is obvious. Wish lists can live in a shared note. They are not part of the random draw.

White elephant is a different game

White elephant, Yankee swap, and Dirty Santa need an order, not a secret pair. Put the same guests on the wheel spinner, turn on remove winner, and spin once per turn. The first name picks a wrapped gift. The next name may steal, under whatever steal limit you announced.

Do not use that order as your Secret Santa list. One game hides the recipient. The other shows every pick. Mixing them is how someone ends up with two jobs and someone else with none.

If someone drops out after the draw

The person who was going to give to them needs a new recipient, and the person who was going to receive from them needs a new giver. The clean fix is to redraw only those two links, on the same call, with the remaining names visible. A fresh full draw is fine if the group is small and nobody has shopped yet. Once gifts are bought, swaps need the buyers' consent.

FAQ

Can a Secret Santa name picker stop me buying for myself?

AllWheel does not build the full pair list in one click. Draw one recipient at a time with remove-after-pick. If a person draws their own name, redraw that slot. If the last name left is their own, swap with one earlier pair.

How do I keep couples from drawing each other in Secret Santa?

Before that person's draw, take the partner's name off the list, draw, then put the partner back for everyone else. Say that rule before the party so it is not a surprise.

Should I email the Secret Santa matches?

Read each match out, or write it on a slip the person keeps. AllWheel does not email assignments and does not store the list after you close the tab.

Can the same name list set a white elephant picking order?

Yes. Put every guest on the wheel, turn on remove winner, and spin once per turn. That order is who picks a gift next, which is a different game from Secret Santa pairs.
